<p>THE Field Band Foundation hosted the 20th Year National Field Band Celebration at Alexandra Stadium on 7 October. There were loud sounds of brass, percussion, marimbas and steel drums, accompanied by flags and colourful costumes. The Field Band Foundation was founded in 1997 to use the global performance and to bring focused life-skills training to young people in disadvantaged areas. Since then, more than 50 000 youngsters have gone through the programme. The event was graced by Johannesburg Executive Mayor Councilor Herman Mashaba, Department of Arts and Culture deputy directorgeneral, Kelebogile Sethibelo and Field Band Foundation CEO Nicky DU Plussie.</p>

<p>The bands that competed included the Ceramic Industries Setlabotjjha Field Band, Scatec Solar Philipstown Field Band, Ponahalo De Beers Kronstad Field Band, Ponahalo De Beers Viljoenskroon Field Band, Ponahalo De Beers Parys Field Band, Emalahleni Filed Band, Anglo American Kuruman Field Band, De beers Musina Field Band, Investec Alexandra Field Band, Investec Black Like Me Soweto Field Band, De Beers Blouberg Field Band.</p>

<p>“This is a very important event for the Field Band Foundation. We have 21 projects across the country and each of those projects services two separate bands of 140 people each and in those bands the kids learn to play and dance but the most critical thing is to perform because that’s where they showcase their talent, show what they have learnt and they get that wonderful feeling of what it means to put on a performance together with your friends. ” Said the chief executive officer Nicky Du Plessis. He said there were 42 Field Bands in 21 areas including rural settings where life skills programmes run alongside the joy of music and dance.</p>

<p>The Field Band Foundation chairman, Brian Gibson said in his remarks, “You are an asset to your generation, to the field Band Foundation and to South Africa. I want to encourage you to stick to this path of excellence and effort – for that will bring you rewards throughout life.” Investec, Black Like Me, Soweto Field Bands swept thirteen trophies and where Alex’s Investec Alexandra Field Band brought their A game and performed an outstanding and intriguing performance that earned them a National Champion Band trophy and nine other trophies.</p>
